Works under the direction of the Manager of Health Planning and Promotion and is responsible for educating elementary and middle school children about the harmful effects of smoking. The coordinator will encourage children not to use tobacco products.

1. Three (3) years experience in public health of which one (1) year of experience working with health promotion/ education, nutrition, or medical anthropology; and
2. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public health, public administration, or a closely related degree; or
3. Equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
4. (Master's Degree in public health, public health administration, health care administration or communication preferred.)
5. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)
1. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or secure one upon date of employment.
2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile; and, meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
3. Work will require attendance at meetings and activities on weekends and/or after regular work hours.
4. Work will require travel to locations outside of the office.
1. Organizes and convenes a county-wide tobacco coalition.
2. Collaborates with existing youth groups to implement a peer education program.
3. Implements an evidence-based tobacco prevention curriculum in Shelby County Schools and after-care programs.
4. Encourages and/or implements Gold Sneaker Program in daycares and head starts.
5. Implements a mobile app for adults to increase awareness of effects of secondhand smoke exposure in cars, homes and public places.
6. Develops and supports employers' adoption of a tobacco-free workplace policy.
7. Publishes tobacco use prevention magazine.
8. Educates parents to increase knowledge of current trends in tobacco use and peer pressure strategies at PTA meetings.
9. Educates youth during significant tobacco observation days and months (e.g. Kick Butts Day, Healthy Choices Week, National Prevention Week, and Red Ribbon Week).
10. Develops school based activities for children to enforce their understanding of the dangers
of smoking.
11. Encourages movie theater tobacco-free campus policy.
12. Provides group cessation counseling for children and parents who wish to stop smoking.
13. Subsidizes tobacco cessation enrollment fee.
14. Develops and conducts presentations to inform parents and children of the dangers of smoking.
15. Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
1. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of epidemiology as related to public health preparedness planning.
2. Ability to conduct statistical analysis of epidemiological data.
3. Knowledge of community resources including the organization of community health care systems and the local public health system.
4. Computer skills involving epidemiological database systems.
5. Ability to prepare detailed reports and work plans and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
