Works under the direction of the Manager of Health Planning and Promotion and is responsible for educating and empowering the community to reduce secondhand smoke exposure.


SALARY:

1. Three (3) years experience in public health of which one (1) year of experience working with health promotion/ education, nutrition, or medical anthropology; and
2. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public health, public administration, or a closely related degree; or
3. Equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
4. (Master's Degree in public health, public health administration, health care administration or communication preferred.)
5. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)
1. Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or secure one upon date of employment.
2. Must have daily access to an operable automobile; and, meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
3. Work will require attendance at meetings and activities on weekends and/or after regular work hours.
4. Work will require travel to locations outside of the office.
1. Provides individual & group counseling, education & support for tobacco cessation.
2. ntegrates a second-hand smoke presentation with other services within the Shelby County
Health Department.
3. Facilitates linkages to support services including the "Quit Line", Nicotine Anonymous, the American Lung Association etc.
4. Provides trainings to apartment complexes and other living facilities on the harmful effects of second hand smoke.
5. Educates adults at health fairs and conferences on the benefits of not smoking.
6. Provides advice, direction and consultation to ensure that work is being performed according to established policies.
7. Demonstrates tobacco cessation competencies.
8. Provides community education and outreach related to second hand-smoke and related activities.
9. Educates head start/day care facilities staff on the harmful effects of second hand smoke.
10. Encourages movie theaters to have tobacco-free campus policy.
11. Coordinates involvement and education of families and/other natural supports.
12. Educates parents to increase knowledge of current trends in tobacco use and peer pressure strategies at PTA meetings.
13. Educates parents to increase knowledge of current trends in tobacco use and second hand smoke.
14. Educates adults during significant tobacco observation days.
15. Organizes and convene a county-wide tobacco coalition.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
1. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of epidemiology as related to public health preparedness planning.
2. Ability to conduct statistical analysis of epidemiological data.
3. Knowledge of community resources including the organization of community health care systems and the local public health system.
4. Computer skills involving epidemiological database systems.
5. Ability to prepare detailed reports and work plans and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
